BRIDGEPORT — Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church is hosting its annual Oktoberfest, a joyous celebration of dinner and dancing.

The event begins at noon Sept. 21 on the church grounds, 3116 S. Racine Ave.

"Lots of people come out and have an enjoyable time and they actually come back to church. The truth is, church is not just for Sunday. We're here around the clock and this is our way of doing outreach to the community," said longtime pastor the Rev. George Mrochen.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $8 for kids ages 5-12. Kids 4 and under are free. Tickets won't be sold at the door, so organizers say it's wise to order in advance and reserve a spot.

The ticket price includes a catered dinner of wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, fried chicken, German potato salad, sauerkraut, green beans and salad. The Ron Smolen Band will provide live German music.

And yes, there will be beer.

"In moderation, yes," Mrochen said. "We always make sure there's a limit to the beer. We even have some home beer produced by one of members."
