MOUNT GREENWOOD — Had the game been determined on the ice, Chicago's police and firefighters wouldn't stand much of a chance against the members of the Chicago Blackhawks Alumni Association.

Instead, these two sides will face off in a game of 16-inch softball at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 14 at Saint Xavier University in Mount Greenwood.

The 7th Annual Blackhawk Alumni & Friends Charity Softball Classic is free and will be held at the Southwest Side university's Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field at 3700 W. 103rd St.

Howard Ludwig says the free family-friendly game will feature some storied Blackhawks alumni:

The event raises money for the Chicago Firefighters’ Ende, Menzer, Walsh & Quinn Retiree's, Widow's and Children’s Assistance Fund, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, and other related police and fire charities.

Chicago Blackhawks alumni already committed to the event include Jack O'Callahan, Brian Noonan, Reid Simpson, Cliff Koroll, Murray Bannerman, Troy Murray, Reggie Kerr, Grant Mulvey and Mark Lavarre.

These former players will play softball as well as share stories and provide autographs. Some 1,500 people are expected at the event, which also includes food, an inflatable play-area, games for children and raffles, said Karla Thomas, executive director of media relations for Saint Xavier.

Current Blackhawks players are also invited to the charity event. Last year, right winger Ben Smith attended the game along with Hawks prospect Adam Clendening.

The game raises about $100,000 annually via sponsorship. For the fifth year, BMO Harris has served as a presenting sponsor. Other major sponsors include CME Group, WGN TV and Radio, Saint Xavier University, Jewel/Osco and Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2.

Besides the Blackhawks game, Saint Xavier will also host the annual Chicago Fire versus Chicago Police Department city-wide 16-inch softball championship. This game will be included among the festivities for the Blackhawks' charity event.
