WEST CHATHAM — A nonprofit founded by a Simeon Career Academy High School alumnus is sponsoring its first fundraiser for the school's baseball teams.

A community garage sale will run from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 20 inside the parking lot at Simeon, 8147 S. Vincennes Ave. It is being sponsored by the SimeonNation organization, whose Founder and Executive Director Tambra Chadwell is a 1987 graduate of the school.

While the event is free, vendors interested in selling items at the garage sale must pay a $35 registration fee. Two food trucks will also be on site as well as free document shredding, according to Chadwell.

"Coach [Gerald] Ingram approached me about this fundraiser idea because he knew I was an alumni," said Chadwell, who played basketball during her four years at Simeon. "This is the first Simeon fundraiser for me but I hope not my last. I would like to make this garage sale an annual fundraising event."

The school's freshman baseball coach Gerald Ingram said he plans to take both the freshman and varsity teams to visit his alma mater, Western Kentucky University, during spring break next year.

"I'm looking at taking 17 players from each team to spend a week there and I estimate the cost will be a little under $25,000," Ingram said. "I don't expect to raise that amount from the garage sale. We plan to have more fundraisers as the year goes on."

Those interested in selling items should call Ingram at 773-704-6491.
