JEFFERSON PARK — The Taste of Polonia officially kicked off Friday, despite some rainfall early in the evening.

The fest, billed as the largest festival of Polish food, culture and beer in North America, runs through Labor Day weekend and is expected to draw an estimated 30,000 people to Jefferson Park on the Northwest Side.

Heather Cherone says the festival is more than pierogis:

The four-day festival, which is the 34th annual fundraiser for the Copernicus Center, will run from noon-10:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from noon-10 p.m. Monday.

Admission to the festival is $7 for adults, and children 12 or younger are free.

Nearly 40 bands are scheduled to play on three stages, which includes a kids stage featuring musical and dance acts. Parents can also let their kids run wild in a bounce-house village. Admission is $5.

In addition to game booths and stands selling Polish-themed merchandise and crafts, 14 restaurants are on hand to serve Polish beer and traditional food, such as pierogies.

Inside the Copernicus Center, festivalgoers can enjoy performances by a symphony and choir.
