PULLMAN — Legendary R&B group The Whispers will headline Chicago State University's annual fundraiser that provides scholarships to needy students.

The Chicago State University Foundation is sponsoring the 20th Anniversary Awards and Scholarship Fundraiser Concert, which begins with a 6 p.m. reception followed by a 7 p.m. dinner and 8 p.m. concert on Sept. 19 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, 540 N. Michigan Ave.

Tickets are $350 and can be purchased online or by calling the foundation at 773-995-3839.

A private reception to kick off the event will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. this Thursday at PNC Bank, 1 N. Franklin St.

Chicago State officials said proceeds from the event would go to provide student scholarships, technology enhancements and general support for the South Side school, where 95 percent of its 6,200 students receive financial aid.

“The CSU Foundation has been transforming the lives of students by financially supporting their educational dreams and allowing them to attain the tools for life-long success,” said Maurice Grant, board chairman for the foundation. “As we contemplate this milestone anniversary we remain focused on helping even more students attain their educational goals.”

Will Evans Jr., president of Peoples Gas, also will be honored at the event for his community service.

“The CSU Foundation is helping young people succeed and I’m honored that they have chosen to recognize me as part of their 20th anniversary," Evans said. “I am keenly aware of the opportunities that an education affords in attaining career success."
