ENGLEWOOD — The Southwest Federation Block Clubs of Greater Englewood, which is made up of 10 block clubs, will sponsor a summit for residents to learn more about their neighborhoods.

The free Englewood Empowerment Summit runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Academy of St. Benedict the African building, 6550 S. Harvard Ave., and a continental breakfast will be served during registration from 8-9 a.m.

Debra Thompson, an Englewood resident for 59 years and chairwoman of the federation, said every elected official representing the neighborhood has been invited.

Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th) is planning to come, Thompson said. She also invited U.S. Rep. Rush (D-Chicago), pastor of the Beloved Community Christian Church in Englewood, and other neighborhood aldermen including JoAnn Thompson (16th), Roderick Sawyer (6th), Pat Dowell (3rd), Latasha Thomas (17th) and Willie Cochran (20th).

Debra Thompson added that the first-ever summit will provide information to residents about their elected officials, schools, how to read their property tax bills, how to start a block club, how use local police stations as a community resource and more.

"You cannot be empowered if you do not know yourself and your neighborhood first," she said. "That is why a summit of this magnitude was created."
