WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A South Side hair salon, co-owned by an aldermanic candidate for the city's 21st ward, is sponsoring back-to-school haircuts for students living in her ward.
The free haircuts and activities run from noon-5 p.m. Sunday at Scoop’s Hair Mechanics, 9407 S. Ashland Ave., whose co-owner is Doris Brooks, a challenger to Ald. Howard Brookins (21st) in the February 2015 city elections. Free school supplies and food will also be given away.
"Scoop’s Hair Mechanics wants to see students return fully equipped to learn," Brooks said.
Brooks said her purpose for sponsoring the event a second year is not political.
“As longtime residents and owners of a new business within our community of Auburn Gresham and Washington Heights, it is important for us to give back to the community that supports us,” Brooks said.
