SOUTH LOOP — Traffic is back to normal in the South Loop after being diverted Monday morning for a gas leak.

About 11:08 a.m., a gas company work crew struck a gas line near State Street and Roosevelt Road, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The Chicago Fire Department called for a level two hazmat response and evacuated some stores near the intersection, authorities said.

Traffic and CTA buses were temporarily rerouted on Roosevelt between Wabash Avenue and State as well as on State between Roosevelt Road and 9th Street, Estrada said.

The leak was capped at 11:50 a.m., and traffic returned to normal shortly after noon.
