HUMBOLDT PARK — A man who was taking apart a water tank atop a building in Humboldt Park was seriously injured after he fell while working, authorities said.

About 3:45 p.m. Monday, the 38-year-old man and another man were dismantling an old water tank on a building in the 3000 block of West Grand Avenue, police and fire officials said.

The 38-year-old fell when a wooden ladder affixed to the water tank collapsed, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford. The ladder gave way due to rotting wood, Langford said.

The man fell about 30 feet and landed on the building's roof, Langford said. He was transported to John H. Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.

As of Monday evening, the man remained in serious condition but had been stabilized, police said.

The other worker was not injured, Langford said.
