EDGEWATER — Loyola University opened this week its bike-and-pedestrian path in the 6300 block of North Kenmore Avenue.

Here's a first look:

The university bought the street on the block last year from the city for $330,000. Dozens of parking spaces were lost in the deal, but the university won the support of local groups and 48th Ward Ald. Harry Osterman.

The new pathway, essentially an expansion of Loyola's lakeshore campus, includes permeable brick surface, green space and planters.

Workers are still wrapping up the north end of the pathway, but work should be completed this month, according to the university.

Loyola said it spent $3.5 million to build the pathway, which is open to the public.
