GAGE PARK — Ombudsman Chicago, which operates two alternative high schools, is again partnering with Chicago Public Schools to open its first South Side school.

The alternative learning program provider will host a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 28 at the school, 6057 S. Western Ave., followed by an Open House from 4-7 p.m. Students can register online for classes, which begin next month, or call 312-806-9022.

Ombudsman Chicago is part of the Chicago Public Schools' Office of Education Options, so tuition is free and the school could accommodate up to 300 students, said Brinton Flowers, a spokesman for Ombudsman Chicago.

The alternative high school will focus on kids who have dropped out or are significantly behind, and this past school year 30 students graduated. The admission process is fairly easy, said Flowers.

"Students must be between the ages of 14 and 21, have completed eighth grade and reside within the city of Chicago," he said. "Student transcripts are evaluated as part of the enrollment process to determine a projected length of enrollment to meet all CPS graduation requirements."

Adding schools that will provide alternative ways for students to graduate is part of the school district's long-term plan, said CPS officials.

The other two school locations are 7500 N. Harlem Ave. and 2401 W. Congress Pkwy. Last year, the school had considered opening its first South Side location at 3214 W. 63rd St. in Chicago Lawn, but was not able to use the building due to city regulations, according to Flowers.

Ald. JoAnn Thompson (16th), whose ward includes the new school site, said she is thrilled to have the high school in her ward.

“I have always believed that a good education is essential to success in life. Now youth in our community have another great educational option that will help them graduate from high school and prepare them for the future," Thompson said.
