RIVER NORTH — An exhibition at the Jean Albano Gallery in River North will celebrate the life and work of local artist Margaret Wharton.

Wharton, who graduated with an master of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975, was an artist all her life. Her primary medium was sculpture, and the River North gallery often showcased her work, which they described as focusing "on the manipulation of objects such as chairs or books and their subsequent transformation into witty and critical works of art."

Her work is described as precise and expertly crafted, with themes that were often steeped in irony and humor. Her work is featured in collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Yale Art Museum in New Haven, Conn.

Wharton died in January at age 70 of complications related pulmonary disease.

The exhibition opens at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and will be displayed through Oct. 25 in the gallery at 215 W. Superior St. It will showcase work from throughout Wharton's nearly 40-year career.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibition can also be viewed by appointment.
