DOWNTOWN — How can you turn old gym shoes into strawberry rhubarb pie?

By donating gently used athletic shoes to the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation at participating restaurants South Water Kitchen, Atwood Restaurant, Sable Kitchen and Bar and 312 Chicago. All four are co-hosting a shoe drive to benefit the nonprofit.

The Downtown restaurants, all part of the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants group, will collect gently used gym shoes from Aug. 8 to Sept. 1.

Each donation will be rewarded with a coupon for a free dessert at any of the four restaurants with the purchase of an entree. Options include bourbon pecan bread pudding at South Water Kitchen, creamsicle pavlova and strawberry-rhubarb hand pie at Sable and bacon-root beer donuts at Atwood.

The shoes will be used in a public display on Sept. 14 meant to illustrate the thousands touched by pediatric cancer, according to a release.

After the event, all shoes will be donated to Share Your Soles, a nonprofit that donates shoes to individuals in need in impoverished countries.
