HERMOSA — Four Chicago Public Schools in Humboldt Park and Hermosa will receive new arts and physical education teachers for the upcoming school year using Tax Increment Financing money, according to CPS officials.

Two physical education teachers are slated for Kelvyn Park High School; one arts teacher for Nixon Elementary; one arts teacher for McAuliffe Elementary; and half of one arts teacher for Lowell Elementary. Seventy-five percent of each position to be funded using a portion of $21.5 million in TIF money being used to hire 168 more arts and gym teachers citywide, according to CPS spokesman Joel Hood.

Schools applied for the funds under terms set by CPS: Arts schools were required to have an Arts Liaison in place and provide arts data for the most recent school year. They also guaranteed to pay 25 percent of the teacher’s salary for the first year, 50 percent for the second and 100 percent by the third.

All high schools were eligible to apply for physical education teachers, but preferences were given to school with need for the greatest number of gym teachers, Hood said.
