CITY HALL — The City Council more than doubled the fine for vandalism Wednesday, hoping it will slow down graffiti in the city.

Signing off on a measure approved by the Committee on Public Safety, the full council hiked the fine for vandalism from $750 to at least $1,500 and as much as $2,500.

Those caught tagging would also be liable for repair costs.

The new ordinance would keep the minimum fine for parents and legal guardians of minors charged with vandalism at $250, but increased the maximum from $750 to $1,000.

Aldermen also urged public service as an alternative punishment for needy families charged with vandalism.
