'The Smurfs 2' on Tap for Movies in the Parks on Northwest Side

EDISON PARK — The hybrid live action-animated flick "The Smurfs 2" will light up the night sky at Brooks Park Friday as part of the Chicago Park District's Movies in the Parks series.

"The Smurfs 2" — based on the beloved 1980s cartoon — tells the story of the villain Gargamel's plan to replace the Smurfs with look-alike little blue creatures called the Naughties. The movie features the voices of Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Katy Perry and Hank Azaria.

Moviegoers can bring a blanket and a picnic basket to watch current and classic flicks for free during the series.

The schedule for the next month is:

• "The Smurfs 2" at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Park, 7100 N. Harlem Ave.
• "The Wizard of Oz" 8 p.m. July 30 at Gladstone Park, 5421 N. Menard Ave.
• "E.T." at 8 p.m., July 30 at Portage Park, 4100 N. Long Ave.
• "The Nut Job" at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 2, Sauganash Park, 5861 N. Kostner Ave.
• "Space Jam" at 8 p.m. Aug. 4, Indian Road Park, 6010 W. Matson Ave.
• "Despicable Me" at 8 p.m., Aug. 6, Merrimac Park, 6343 W. Irving Park Road
• "Man of Steel" at 8 p.m., Aug. 7, Rosedale Park, 6312 W. Rosedale Ave.
• "The Lego Movie" at 8 p.m., Aug. 8, Austin-Foster Playlot Park, 6020 W. Foster Ave.
• "The Blues Brothers" at 7 p.m. Aug. 8, Jefferson Memorial Park, 4822 N. Long Ave.
