UPTOWN — Two relics of 1950s pop culture are the inspirations behind this month's Vintage Garage Chicago flea market.
The theme of Vintage Garage Chicago's July 20 market at 5051 N. Broadway is "Rockabilly and Tiki," according to the flea market website.
Rockabilly was born in the 1950s as a musical genre that combined rock, bluegrass and country. Tiki culture in America, with roots in the art, attitudes and aesthetic of Polynesia, became a pop culture phenomenon in the 40s and 50s.
The event also features a "Rockabilly Best Dressed Contest" where people can show off their best Rockabilly styled outfits.
Vendors at the flea market "will offer vintage items that fit the themes, including clothing, jewelry, housewares, furniture and more," Vintage Garage Chicago said.
As always, the theme of the flea market doesn't encompass the mass of vintage items that will be sold at the event, which costs $5 to enter and also includes records and books.
The event gathers vintage and antique dealers under one roof once a month from April to October.
Organizers said they are still accepting applications from vendors.
