UPTOWN — More than 300 cyclists will embark on a two-day, 190-mile bike ride this weekend aimed at raising $1 million for organizations that serve people living with HIV/AIDS.
Saturday marks the 11th annual Ride for AIDS Chicago fundraiser.
Starting at 6:30 a.m., participants will pump their pedals from 1022 W. Central St. in north suburban Evanston to Elkhorn, Wis., according to event organizer the Test Positive Aware Network, a nonprofit organization at 5050 N. Broadway.
The ride is designed to raise money for TPAN and partnering agencies that provide testing, medical resources and counseling for people with HIV/AIDS.
TPAN said the ride has raised almost $2.5 million in its first decade, and aims for the ambitious goal of $1 million more before the weekend is over. Donors have pledged nearly $700,000 so far.
The Ride for AIDS Chicago event ends with closing ceremonies Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Road.
The City Council passed a resolution in June recognizing Ride for AIDS Chicago participants "for their commitment to raising awareness and funding for HIV/AIDS services in Chicagoland."
