UPTOWN — The weekly Argyle Night Market returns for year two on Thursday with local cuisine, local produce and live entertainment.
The market is scheduled every Thursday until Sept. 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Argyle between Sheridan and Kenmore.
Last year's inaugural market drew about 500 people every Thursday, according to Uptown United, a community organization helping run the market along with the city and 48th Ward Office.
Uptown United President Alyssa Berman-Cutler said local businesses that signed on as vendors last year "really felt like it helps them gain new customers."
"We definitely would love to see even more people come out and enjoy it," Berman-Cutler said.
Some of area residents' favorite local restaurants are slated to serve grub at the weekly market, including Sun Wah BBQ, Tank Noodle, Hon Kee Restaurant, Ba Le Restaurant et Cafe and an array of other Asian culinary staples in the Argyle Street area.
The event also features local produce, arts and crafts and live music.
The market highlights a slice of Uptown local leaders consider vital in efforts to improve business and safety in the area.
With plans for a streetscape on Argyle and European-style "shared street" makeover, Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) and the city hope to drum up foot traffic for businesses on Argyle, a corridor rife with vacant storefronts.
Osterman has said that more feet on the street should equal more eyes on the street and deter crime and vagrancy.
The Argyle Night Market is just one piece of the puzzle, Osterman said.
