CHICAGO — Police shot a man in Greater Grand Crossing early Friday.

The incident happened just after 4 a.m. in the 7400 block of South Vincennes Avenue.

According to Pat Camden, a police union spokesman, officers responded to a 911 call in the 7400 block of South Princeton Avenue around 4 a.m. They'd been told there might be a man in the street with a gun.

When police arrived, Camden said, they found three men standing on the corner. One tried to run away, and an officer chased him.

As the man rounded a corner at 74th Street and Vincennes Avenue, he pulled a gun and fired toward the officer, Camden said. The officer returned fire, striking the man in his chest and arm.

The 23-year-old man was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.

Camden said police recovered a semiautomatic gun from the man.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which handles officer-involved shootings, is investigating.
