CHICAGO — Monday night's storms are still causing problems in the Chicago area, with flooding on the expressway near O'Hare Airport causing huge traffic delays for commuters headed to the airport Tuesday morning.

Some O'Hare-bound travelers even took the drastic step of getting out of their cars and starting the long walk to the airport on the shoulder of the expressway.

Traffic into the airport on I-190 near Manheim Road has been narrowed to one lane due to significant flooding, said Sgt. Henry Spight of the Illinois State Police.

About a foot of standing water is on the expressway, and commuters headed to O'Hare should get off the expressway and use local roads to get to the airport, Spight said.

During the late afternoon and evening storms, rain fell at a rate of about 1-2 inches per hour, according to a spokesman for the National Weather Service.

In the last 24 hours about 2.27 inches of rain fell on the city, the spokesman said.
