MCKINLEY PARK — School budget cuts, teacher layoffs and charter school funding will be the focus of a discussion hosted by several grassroots neighborhood groups.

The "Public Meeting on Defending Public Schools" event is scheduled for 6-7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the McKinley Park branch of the Chicago Public Library, 1915 W. 35th St.

It's hosted by the McKinley Park Progressive Alliance, Bridgeport Alliance and Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, groups that have been critical of Concept Schools, a management company that opened its Horizon Math and Science Academy in McKinley Park last year.

Last month, the Des Plaines-based company came under federal investigation for allegations of white-collar crimes at some of the 19 schools it operates, officials said.
