COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man accused in the robbery-turned-murder of a Chicago Lawn teen who aspired to become a veterinarian was ordered held on $1 million bail Tuesday.

William Paschal, 18, is accused in the January 16 murder of 19-year-old Kevin Baker during a robbery.

Baker and his 23-year-old cousin were walking home about 4:15 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Campbell Avenue when Paschal and another, unknown person jumped out of a maroon mini-van with guns and demanded their belongings, prosecutors said Tuesday

Baker and his cousin both handed over their cellphones and kept walking toward their home, located just a block down the road, prosecutors said.

Paschal's alleged accomplice, who has not been charged, allegedly is the one who opened fire, striking Baker five times in the arm, head, back and abdomen, prosecutors said.

Baker's cousin, Arlene Allen said one of the men asked Baker "who do you ride with?" before shooting him in his head. Baker was in his first year of school at Harold Washington College and wanted to be a veterinarian, family said.

He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he died two days later, police said.

Paschal, of the 7200 block of South Artesian Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of robbery after he was arrested around midnight Sunday in the 6400 block of South Oakley Avenue, police said.

A Cook County judge set his bail at $1 million Tuesday during a brief court hearing.
