AUBURN GRESHAM — A national discount retailer is closing five Chicago stores next month, including one in Auburn Gresham.
On Aug. 30, North Carolina-based Family Dollar will close the store at 8908 S. Ashland Ave. as part of a "decisive action to better position the Company to succeed in an adverse operating environment," said Bryn Winburn, a company spokesman.
But residents won't have to travel far to find another store. Less than two miles away is a store at 1200 W. 87th St. and another at 8035 S. Halsted St. Family Dollar said it has 85 Chicago stores.
The company is closing the store after a recent review of all its stores, which led to 370 stores being closed nationwide.
The closing store employs 8-10 people, said Winburn, who added the company would help laid-off workers identify opportunities at its other stores.
