LAKEVIEW — A 7,000-square-foot property that once housed a CTA substation is up for sale in Lakeview.

The electrical substation at 1044 W. Newport Ave. was decommissioned in 1974 "as it was no longer needed for operation of the system," CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said.

The building has been used for storage ever since.

Jones Lang LaSalle, a commercial real estate firm that handles CTA property, announced this month it would be accepting bids for the lot, which sits at the corner of Newport and Seminary avenues.

The 7,082-square-foot lot has been zoned for townhouses, two-flats and multi-unit buildings, according to the firm. If developers create several units, the minimum lot size is 1,650 square feet.

Anyone interested in buying the property must submit a bid and $10,000 deposit by July 28. Losing bids will be refunded.

A site visit is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 9. To attend, prospective bidders need to sign a release form. For more information, visit www.ctarealestate.com.
