CHINATOWN — The sound of music will fill the air at Chinatown Square.

Presented by the VanderCook College of Music, the free concert starts at 7 p.m. July 1 in the Chinatown Square development, 2133 S. China Place.

Faculty and students at the Bronzeville-based college will kick off the festivities with a family drum circle, a "very informal" gathering that will teach kids the basics of rhythm and beats, school spokesman Jeff Sadowski said.

Then, the school's 120-strong orchestra will perform symphony and jazz tunes.

"It's more like a Ravinia setting. Bring your own chairs and blanket," Sadowski said.

The event is sponsored by Lakeside Bank, which has paired with hand-stretched noodle house Hing Kee to offer concertgoers a special $8 concert picnic dinner — just bring this coupon and ask for the "Lakeside Bank Special."
