COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Stolen by a thief with a flair for the romantic, a diamond engagement ring had to be cut off the finger of the woman he was courting, prosecutors said.

A 36-year-old woman discovered her diamond ring missing on June 9 after hiring a company to clean the air ducts in her Lincoln Park home, prosecutors said.

Suspecting the young man who'd been left alone to work in her bedroom, the woman reported the theft to the company, prosecutors said.

Anibal Rodriguez, 22, 'fessed up to the crime, prosecutors said. He agreed to return the stolen ring, but that proved difficult when his girlfriend tried to take it off her finger.

The $2,000 ring had to be cut off the woman's finger by the Chicago Fire Department, prosecutors said. It was returned mangled and missing a diamond.

Rodriguez, arrested and charged with theft, was released by a Cook County judge last week to return to court on his on recognizance.
