CHICAGO — Police say a West Garfield Park man is responsible for the August 2013 slaying of a man in Back of the Yards.
Steven Douglas, 22, of the 200 block of North Kildare Avenue, is charged with murdering Rico Lawrence, 33, on Aug. 30 of last year. Police on Sunday said Lawrence was 43.
Police say Douglas shot Lawrence in the head about 1:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Winchester Avenue.
Lawrence had been in an altercation with neighbors the night before, and suffered stab wounds near his spine, his family said at the time. Police could not verify the details of the stabbing. But they said Lawrence, who had documented gang ties, was killed outside his home the following day.
"He came home, and that was it," Lawrence's cousin Lisa Harris said.
"Everyone in the neighborhood knew him," said Lillie Harris, a 58-year-old cousin. "He was well-liked."
Douglas is due in court Saturday.
