UPTOWN — Kiss Kiss Cabaret's swan song in Lincoln Park this summer could offer a sneak peek at what the hit burlesque show's producers have planned for the Uptown Underground when the 1920s-inspired venue opens later this year.
The name of Kiss Kiss Cabaret's final weekly show is "Speakeasy!"
It's scheduled to run from July 11 to Aug. 29 at the Greenhouse Theater Center, which the show's owners are leaving after three and a half years for a new venture located at a "speakeasy-style space" in the basement of the Uptown Broadway Building, 4707 N. Broadway.
"The 'Speakeasy' theme pays homage to our past and our future," Kiss Kiss Cabaret co-founder and co-producer Jenn A. Kincaid said in a statement.
Jazzy solos, Prohibition-themed drink specials and a "musical nod to the Marx Brothers" by the Claptrap Family Orchestra are all on the bill.
"I couldn't think of grander send-off from the Greenhouse Theater Center or a better house warming party for the Uptown Underground," Kincaid said.
The Uptown Underground would feature a 150-seat main stage, a 50-60 seat cabaret stage and a full bar in the basement of the 1920s building. Terra cotta covers the landmarked building, rumored as a former Al Capone speakeasy.
In January, Kincaid and her partner Chris O. Biddle announced plans for the "retro-themed adult entertainment venue" in the heart of Uptown's entertainment district, which officials hope to make a booming destination.
Kincaid and Biddle's Uptown operation will house Kiss Kiss Cabaret and other burlesque acts, cabaret-style entertainment, live music, stand-up comedy and vaudevillian variety shows. After a six-week soft opening, the venue will be open seven nights a week.
A more than $200,000 renovation of the site aims to have it ready for action by the fall.
Biddle gave a tour of the still raw space in a recently published YouTube video, walking viewers from the front doors, down the main staircase into the Uptown Underground and through the 7,000-square-foot space, pointing out where everything will be once the project is finished.
The owners are still seeking funds to fund the renovation and are accepting donations.
