UPTOWN — Runners raising money for sick children are set to race along Uptown's lakefront Saturday while gobbling as much bacon as they can — not the healthiest snack but at least it's for a good cause.

The Bacon Chase 5K and 0.05K is scheduled Saturday at Montrose Beach, 4400 N. Lake Shore Drive. Runners have until Thursday to register for the 5K "Piggy Pilgrimage" or the 0.05K "Blitz to the Bacon."

Adeshina breaks down the "Bacon Chase" on DNAinfo Radio:

Registration earns you entry to the race as well as Bacon Chase swag, a bacon-scented bib, unlimited bacon bits at bacon stations across the course and unlimited bacon at the finish line, where racers 21 years and older can celebrate with a complimentary Bloody Mary. We're assuming it has bacon in it.

Runners are encouraged to sign up during registration to raise money for St. Jude Children's research hospital, which seeks to cure children with life-threatening illnesses.

The races are untimed, and there are no prizes involved.

"As far as prizes go," says the event website, "you will be rewarded with bacon at every opportunity. If you need a medal, we can chew one for you out of bacon."

Combining high-sodium bacon and a race probably isn't the healthiest thing for your heart, and topping it off with a bloody at the finish line is certainly more fun and delicious than drinking water but definitely not the healthiest call.

Bacon Chase organizers said on their website: "Bacon Chase is not responsible for any bacon-induced comas," which sounds like a joke — but you'll still have to sign a waiver to run.
