Man Charged in Bridgeport Hit-and-Run That Killed Cyclist

CHICAGO — A Bridgeport man was charged in a hit-and-run accident that killed a bicyclist just a block away from his home Thursday evening.

Gabriel Herrera, 65, is due in court Saturday after being arrested following the accident in the 2900 block of South Poplar Avenue Thursday at 5:35 p.m., police said.

A car struck a 59-year-old woman, identified as Suai Xie, of the 400 block of West 28th Place, then drove away eastbound, police said.

Xie was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:08 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Herrera, of the 3000 block of South Quinn Street, was charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident that caused an injury or death. He was also charged with a misdemeanor failure to provide information or provide aid. He was ticketed for a failure to reduce speed.
