CHICAGO — Thieves broke into Charles Hughes Elementary School Monday and got away with 123 iPads worth almost $50,000, officials said.
At least two burglars smashed windows to get into the school at 4247 W. 15th St. in the Lawndale neighborhood early Monday morning.
They made off with the cache of iPads, but authorities hope tracking technology will help police find them. The equipment is also insured against theft, officials said.
"A full and comprehensive investigation is underway into the theft of iPads from Charles Hughes Elementary School," CPS spokesman Joel Hood said in an email. "While the investigation continues, CPS will work with school leadership to minimize the impact this incident will have on student learning."
School officials are asking for anyone with information about the theft to call Chicago Police at 312-747-8380.
