ROGERS PARK — Three new playgrounds are coming to parks in Rogers Park, as officials Saturday officially broke ground on the projects.

The new playgrounds will be at:

• Lazarus Park, 1257 W. Columbia Ave.

• Matanky Playlot Park, 6925 N. Ridge Ave.

• Paschen Park, 1932 W. Lunt Ave.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Park District Supt. Michael Kelly were among the dignitaries at Paschen Park. In a statement, the mayor said such playgrounds are more than just places for kids to exercise and have fun but they also serve as "community hubs."

The three playgrounds are part of 103 neighborhood playgrounds that will be built or refurbished in 2014. Under a program called Chicago Plays!, the park district will rebuild or refurbish 325 playgrounds over the next five years.

The program uses $125,000 at each playground in an overall $37.5 million effort, the mayor's office said.
