CHICAGO — Police found a rifle, shotgun and a huge cache of ammunition in an Auburn Gresham trash can Tuesday after someone tipped them off, authorities said.
The person flagged down tactical officers in the Gresham district and told them there were guns stashed inside a garbage can in an nearby alley, police said.
Officers found a plastic trash bag stuffed with a rifle, shotgun, rifle scope and more than 160 rounds of ammunition, police said.
"This is an important example of how members of the community can make an impact on crime where they live by providing information about criminal activity," Supt. Garry McCarthy said in a statement.
Police ask anyone who notices criminal activity to contact authorities. Anonymous tips can be texted to "CRIMES" (274637).
