WICKER PARK — A water main break left an under-construction intersection partially flooded Monday afternoon.

Orlando Moreno, a spokesman for Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) said the office was notified of the incident at Milwaukee Avenue, Wood Street and Wolcott Avenue about 2:30 p.m. He was told the crew had hit the water main during construction.

The intersection, identified as particularly dangerous due in part to its strange alignment and unclear pedestrian signs, has been getting a makeover since April.

Orlando Moreno said someone from the water department had turned off the water to the affected area by about 5:45 p.m., and the city was waiting on another crew to help fix the main break.

Earlier, when the water was still gushing, cars were able to move through. However, some pedestrians were seen skipping and jumping around the flood or, in at least one case, straight through.

Water flooded the intersection close to Nori Sushi and spilled over onto nearby Beach Avenue.

The main break should be fixed later Monday or Tuesday at the latest, Orlando Moreno said, and it shouldn't affect the construction schedule.
