Woman Tried to Suffocate 4-Year-Old Daughter With Plastic Bag, Police Say

CHICAGO — A 24-year-old West Ridge woman was charged with attempted first-degree murder after trying to suffocate her 4-year-old daughter with a plastic bag, police said.

Mary Ryan, of the 6100 block of North Hoyne Avenue, turned herself in to police shortly after the crime, which occurred about 11:10 a.m. Monday in the 5800 block of North Western Avenue, police said.

The girl was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where she was listed in good condition, police said.

Ryan was expected to appear in bond court Tuesday.

No further information was available, police said.
