ROGERS PARK — One man was killed and two others were hospitalized Monday after they were shot inside a convenience store on the city's far North Side, police said.

About 7:40 p.m., the three men were in a convenience store in the 1600 block of West Howard Street when someone from across the street pulled out a gun and opened fire through the windows of the store, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

Darnall Gordon, 36, was shot and rushed in critical condition to nearby St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 8:26 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Two other men, ages 25 and 27, were also shot. The 25-year-old was taken to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds in his hip and stomach, Alfaro said. The man's condition had stabilized as of early Tuesday morning.

The 27-year-old man was shot in his right collarbone. He transported himself to St. Francis Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries, Alfaro said.

As of early Tuesday, no one was in custody for the shooting. Gordon, of the 6300 block of North Sacramento Avenue, and the two wounded men had known gang ties, authorities said.

The convenience store, just steps from the Howard Red Line Station, remained closed Tuesday.

At least five people have been killed by gunfire in the Rogers Park neighborhood in the past year, including a 17-year-old Amundsen High School student who was killed in February.

Over the summer, 20-year-old Blake Lamb was killed in a park on the same block as Monday evening's fatal shooting.

Since Lamb's death, things have been relatively quiet on the block, said one business owner near the scene of Monday's shooting. The man declined to be named citing safety concerns. Other nearby business owners and employees did the same.

"I don't know anybody who'd be willing to speak under these circumstances, knowing the kind of people you're dealing with," one employee said.

"Of course they're scared of these guys," said Rogers Park resident Latrice Marshall. "There's so many of them out here."

Marshall said she believed the shooting stemmed from gangs and drug dealing on the stretch of Howard Street.

"It's just sickening," she said. "And to think summer's coming, it only gets worse."

Marshall said she wants police to pressure store owners to keep drug dealing away from the block.

"The store owners know exactly what they're doing," Marshall said. "That's the problem I have."

Another neighbor also called Gordon's death sickening and "sad" but said she thinks police are as on top of the problem as they can be.

Still, the woman declined to be named.

"We've got to walk these streets every day," she said.
