CHICAGO — A century-old railbridge that spanned Western Avenue in Logan Square was demolished this weekend, allowing crews to move forward with construction of the Bloomingdale Trail.

The bridge, at Western and Bloomingdale avenues, was removed ahead of schedule, said officials, who originally predicted Western Avenue would be closed through Monday.

"Took a bit longer than we'd hoped for final debris clean up there yesterday, but the street is back open for all your walking, cycling, busing or driving needs," said an email from Bloomingdale Trail officials.

Work on the bridge was originally scheduled for early February, but extreme weather and utility complications postponed the demolition until Saturday.
