CHICAGO — The body discovered in a Morgan Park Wednesday drainpipe has been identified as Latasha Nevitt, who went missing in 2011, authorities said Friday evening. Police are now conducting a homicide investigation.
Crews working in the 10700 block of South Loomis Street Wednesday found a body wrapped in plastic, Nevitt's husband Isaac Nevitt said Thursday.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office determined the body was Latasha Nevitt, 32, authorities said. She had been missing since October 2011.
Police said Area South detectives are now treating Nevitt's death as a homicide. Police said the missing person case has been clouded by "suspicious circumstances from the beginning." In attempting to find Nevitt, police conducted polygraph tests, used bloodhounds and cadaver dogs, recanvassed the area where she was last seen and issued community alerts, police said. The case was also featured on the television show "First 48: Missing Persons."
Detectives told Isaac Nevitt, 41, they couldn't provide any information until autopsy results came in, he said. An autopsy conducted Friday was inconclusive.
"I'm just sitting here looking at the wall waiting," Isaac Nevitt said before the autopsy was conducted. "That's the hardest part — the waiting. I've been waiting for 2½ years. I would wait another 2½ years, as long as it's not her."
