CHICAGO — Beginning in late March, the Chicago Public Library will be displaying the work of famous street photographer Vivian Maier.
The exhibit will put Maier's work into the context of a highly creative period of her life from the 1950s through the 1970s, featuring 55 images from the book, "Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows" by Richard Cahan and Michael Williams.
"Vivian's photographs tell her life story," Williams said. "She was ahead of her time — recording what she saw on a daily basis with a joy and curiosity that makes her work so compelling."
Maier captures the spirit of the period with shots of Chicago's famous Maxwell Street and protest scenes from 1968, a period of social unrest. Along with her street photography, the exhibit will feature images covering a range of different styles displaying her "relentless curiosity."
The exhibit opens March 29 in the Special Collection Exhibit Hall on the 9th Floor at the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St. The last day to visit the exhibit will be Sept. 28.
The Chicago Public Library will also host a screening of "The Vivian Maier Mystery" at 6 p.m. April 24 at the Harold Washington Library.
