NORWOOD PARK — Two men are dead after an SUV crash on the city's Northwest Side Monday night, officials said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victims as 39-year-old Refujio Gomez of suburban Lyons and 28-year-old Dionte Coleman of the 1800 block of South Fairfield Avenue in North Lawndale.

Coleman, with his passenger Gomez, was driving a GMC Envoy in the 6000 block of North Milwaukee Avenue about 10:45 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman.

The SUV struck two fences before flipping on its side and hitting a light pole, Alfaro said.

The two men were rushed to Our Lady of Resurrection Medical Center. Coleman, of the 1800 block of South Fairfield Avenue, was pronounced dead at 12:03 a.m. Tuesday, according to medical examiners.

Gomez was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. Officials at the medical examiner's office were withholding the men's names as of Tuesday morning because their family members had not yet been notified of their deaths.

Police could not say why the driver lost control of the SUV or if speed was a factor in the crash, Alfaro said.
