WICKER PARK — The Polish Museum of America celebrated the opening of their new museum gift shop Sunday, including a free viewing of the museum for guests.

According to Maria Ciesla, the museum's president, the renovation of the first-floor gift shop represents an attempt to grow with the changing neighborhood.

"We are celebrating our 77th anniversary," she said. "We've stayed in the building all these years and we plan on staying."

The new and improved gift shop includes hundreds of items for sale reflecting the museum's mission as one of the nation's oldest and largest polish history museums. The opening included a free tour of the museum, where rare artifacts through the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are on exhibit.

The museum's entryway renovation is a way to "modernize" for the 21st century, Ciesla said.

"This area is resurging now, so we're going to be here for it," she said. "We always need a supply of new members of all nationalities."
