LAKEVIEW — Neighborhood favorite Southport Grocery and Cafe just got a little national recognition.

The gourmet grocery and restaurant, 3552 N. Southport Ave., won a Good Food Award in the pickles category last week for its smoked onion marmalade.

Good Food is a four-year-old national competition aiming to reward the best American-made foods that are both sustainable and delicious, with categories in coffee, beer, cheese and more. Last year, Southport Grocery won its first Good Food award for its Dilly Beans.

The smoked onion marmalade is made with smoked Vidalia and red onions, two kinds of vinegars, brown sugar, honey and salt. Diners in the cafe portion of the shop may have tasted it on the veggie sandwich with roasted beets, cucumber, tomato, greens, herbed cream cheese and provolone.

Metropolis Coffee Company was the only other Illinois company to win an award. It won with its Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aylele in the coffee category.
