CHICAGO — A man died after being suffocated under the weight of a barbell at his Clearing home Monday, authorities said.

Christopher Gomez, 24, of the 6600 block of South Knox Avenue, was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 11:15 a.m. Monday due to "compressional asphyxia" and being entrapped underneath a barbell, according to an autopsy report from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police responded to a call at the home about 10:20 a.m. that morning, according to Sgt. Antoinette Ursetti, a police spokeswoman.

Police have opened a death investigation in the case that the medical examiner's office had ruled as an accident.
