ROGERS PARK — A woman was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a man barricaded himself in a Rogers Park apartment Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to "a domestic disturbance" at an apartment in the 1300 block of West Birchwood Avenue in Rogers Park about 2:06 p.m., said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

When police arrived, the man barricaded himself in the apartment. A woman managed to escape and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston around 4 p.m. Fire officials were unable to provide details on her injuries but said she was in good condition.

According to Robert Rice, who was temporarily unable to enter his home nearby, the incident is "not totally unexpected."

Rice has lived on the block for about 17 years and said he's seen his share of violence in the area, including the fatal shooting of Mark Villanuevo in November.

Despite the disturbance and police presence Sunday, Rice said he still considers Rogers Park a "very good neighborhood."

Police remained on the scene until 6 p.m. when the issue was resolved, Zala said. The man was taken into custody and then to an area hospital, police said.
