CHICAGO — The extreme cold bearing down on Chicago means an early end to a city holiday tradition.

The Lincoln Park Zoo announced Saturday afternoon it would end the annual ZooLights display a day early.

"Because of the frigid forecast ZooLights Presented by ComEd and Charter One will not take place tomorrow, January 5, as originally scheduled," the zoo announced on its Facebook page. "Instead, the holiday event will end tonight, Saturday, January 4. We apologize for any inconvenience, but safety is our first priority!"

The light display ends at 9 p.m.

Frigid temperatures are expcted to mix with 5-10 inches of snow this weekend, jamming up traffic on the roads and creating delays at the city's airports.

ZooLights celebrated its 19th year this winter.
