BUCKTOWN — Looking for a sandwich before or after your commute?
Though not technically part of CTA property, a new Subway sandwich shop under the CTA Blue Line Western "L" tracks and in front of the Western No. 49 bus stop feels like it could be part of the station.
With plans to open within the next few weeks at 1908 N. Western Ave., the chain sandwich shop is one of two storefronts planned for a new 15-unit apartment complex at the northwest corner of Cortland Street and Western Avenue on the border of Bucktown and Logan Square.
"We've been looking at that area near the train stop for some time. It's a good pocket for us to fill," said Marina Kontogiannis, director of leasing for Subway.
A sign posted in the window of the shop says the Subway is "coming soon" and encourages passerby to "See our New Metro Decor."
Kontogiannis described the Metro decor as "a more upscale, more inviting look" and said she "thinks it will be well received."
The Subway, which is part of a development that includes three apartment buildings and ground-floor retail shops, joins neighbors Belly Shack at 1912 N. Western Ave. and Plazzio's Pizza across the street at 1901 N. Western Ave.
Kontogiannis said there are 12 "Metro Decor" Subways in the Chicago area, and the Western "L" stop will be the fourth in the city, following Subways with the new decor at 333 E. Benton Place in Downtown's Lakeshore East enclave, at 3821 N. Broadway Ave. in Uptown and 2010 W. Division St. in Wicker Park.
Metro decor debuted in Northwest Indiana in October 2012 and features lights hanging from the ceiling, an exposed stone wall and warm autumnal colors like hunter green and orange.
The new decor is considered to be an update to the chain's "Tuscany II" decor, which most Subways have had for the past seven years, Kontogiannis said.
The new Subway is owned by a Subway franchisee who owns another one at 1101 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Edgewater, Kontogiannis said.
The Subway will become the fifth of its kind in the area, joining Subway shops at 1129 N. Western Ave. in Humboldt Park, 1704 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park, 1300 N. Ashland Ave. in the West Town Shopping Plaza and 2010 W. Division St., next to D & D Liquors, in Wicker Park.
