Things to Do in Lincoln Park and Old Town Thursday

CHICAGO — Take the kids to meet the Cat in the Hat, learn some basic cooking tips, see musician Mark Kozelek live or head to one of the neighborhood bars' ugly sweater parties Thursday night.

For kids

Meet & Greet with Cat in the Hat, Whole Foods, 1550 N. Kingsbury St. 10:30-11:30 a.m.

A meet and greet with the character from Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat" is part of a partnership between PBS Chicago and Whole Foods to promote healthy eating for kids. 

Cooking class

Basic Cooking Techniques at Whole Foods, 1550 N. Kingsbury St., 7-9:30 p.m.

Lincoln Park's Whole Foods is apparently having a busy Thursday. In a cooking class open to all skill levels, learn tips on how to saute, steam, blanch, poach, braise, roast, bake and boil foods. The class includes samples and take-home recipe cards. Tickets are $30 and may be bought online.

Music

Mark Kozelek (of Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters) at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave, 8 p.m.

The musician known from Sun Kil Moon and alternative rock band Red House Painters plays Lincoln Hall Thursday. Tickets are $20 online and $23 at the door. The show is for those 21 and older.

Seasonal

Ugly Sweater Party to Benefit Project Ladybug at John Barleycorn, 658 W. Belden Ave., 8 p.m.

The bar hosts an ugly sweater party to support Project Ladybug, which seeks to help children and families affected by cancer. Wear a sweater and bring a new, unwrapped toy to be donated to kids dealing with cancer. Gift cards and other prizes will be doled out to those with the most hideous sweaters. The night's specials include $3 Jameson and Fireball shots, $4 craft beers and well cocktails, $3 domestics, $3 nachos and $6 cheeseburgers.
