WEST LAWN — An off-duty police officer opened fire at a suspect on the Southwest Side after the man pointed a weapon at the cop, police said.

About 12:30 a.m. Thursday, the off-duty police officer saw a 21-year-old man attempting to break into a car near the intersection of 66th Street and Pulaski Road in West Lawn, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman.

When the officer confronted the man, he pointed a gun at the officer, Sedevic said. The suspect then got into his car and began to drive away. The officer fired at the car and shattered a window but did not hit the man.

Police found the 21-year-old after he later walked into Holy Cross Hospital to be treated for injuries from the shattered glass, Sedevic said.

The man told police he had been injured near the intersection of 72nd Street and Ashland Avenue in Englewood, but police found evidence of the earlier break-in inside the man's car.

In other violence:

•A 68-year-old man was killed after he was shot early Thursday morning in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue in Logan Square.

•A 30-year-old man was killed late Wednesday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The man, who lived in Chatham, was shot repeatedly in the 5400 block of South Bishop Street, police said.
