BACK OF THE YARDS — A Chatham man was fatally shot late Wednesday night in the city's Back of the Yards neighborhood, authorities said.

Anthony Rivers, of the 800 block of East 87th Street, was pronounced dead about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday about an hour after he was shot, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Rivers, 30, was sitting in a car in the 5400 block of South Bishop Street about 10:15 p.m. when someone opened fire into the car, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.

Rivers was shot in the back of his head, lower back and left armpit, Greer said. The 30-year-old got out of the car and collapsed in a nearby alley, Greer said. He was rushed in critical condition to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of early Thursday morning, and police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Greer said.
